The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) account for approximately one-third of all occupational injuries and illnesses reported to them by employers every year. As a result, these disorders constitute the largest job-related injury and illness problem in the US today. In 1997, employers reported to the BLS a total of 626,000 lost workdays attributable to MSDs. These disorders accounted for $1 of every $3 spent for workers' compensation in that year. Workers with severe MSDs can face permanent disability that prevents them from returning to their jobs or handling simple, everyday tasks.
Many companies have taken action to address and prevent these problems. OSHA estimates that ergonomic programs already protect fifty percent (50%) of all employees but only twenty eight percent (28%) of all workplaces in general industry. OSHA has added ergonomic regulations under 29 CFR 1910.900 which may pertain to your company.
